What have I done?
I met with a good friend of mine the other morning. We both work nights and he had just gotten off, and I happened to be off that night. Since it had been a few years since we’d last worked on anything media related, that topic came up. Specifically about writing projects of ours.
Thus, the discussion became a challenge. It’s not really a bet, but rather we’ve agreed to a cash incentive. The next time we meet, we’ll assign each other a storyline (this isn’t too hard, because between the two of us, we’ve got about 500,000 story snippets, and plot starters accumulated over the years). Once we each have our assignments, we’ll get a lockbox (each sharing a key) and then we’ll put a pre-determined amount of money. At that point the race is on. Whoever finishes a 90-120 page screenplay within 60 days wins. We haven’t decided if the winner just gets the cash, or gets something bought with the cash. To make things even more interesting, there are cash penalties for going over time, as well as weekly quotas (also with a cash penalty for failure).
This will either keep us motivated, or ruin us financially. We don’t know yet.
I have mixed feelings about this. Yes, I know that we need the motivation, as well as the weekly accountability that we’re staying with it.
I guess I just have to not lose.

Wow… I knew you two were trouble. I love it. If you decide to film, keep me in mind. Not during the semester, of course. I am about to scream I am so stressed. However, if you do anything over the summer….

Well, that goes into stage two … once we finish the scripts, we swap and polish each of them.
That leads into stage three, which involves us contacting a friend, to arrange receipt of these screenplays by an agency, in which this friend also has a friend that reads screenplays.
So if ours are good enough . . .
